What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental difference that affects how people interact, communicate, learn, and behave. It’s often characterized by differences in social communication and interaction, sensory processing, and by the presence of unique interests or repetitive behaviors.

Importantly, autism is a spectrum – every autistic person is unique, with their own strengths and challenges. Some may speak eloquently but struggle with social cues; others might communicate nonverbally but have amazing visual thinking skills.

Autism isn’t a disease to be “cured” – it’s a different way of experiencing the world. Many self-advocates describe autism as an integral part of who they are, a natural brain difference that’s fundamental to their identity. Understanding this perspective can help shift our mindset from trying to “fix” autism to supporting autistic individuals in being their best selves.

A Neurodiversity Perspective: Embracing neurodiversity means recognizing that neurological differences (like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, etc.) are normal variations of the human brain. As parents and caregivers, adopting this mindset can be transformative. Instead of focusing on what’s “wrong,” we learn to appreciate how our autistic loved ones think, move, interact, sense, and process information differently.

For example, your child might communicate in their own way or have a fantastic memory for details. Those differences can be challenging at times, but they also make your child the unique person they are. When we view autism through a lens of acceptance, it becomes easier to celebrate small victories and support growth without trying to force anyone into a one-size-fits-all mold.
